Complimentary drinks for players are one of the best-known Las Vegas traditions: sit at a slot machine or a table game and a cocktail server may come by and take your order. This guide explains how the custom works in 2026, what to expect, and how to tip. It is information, not a promise: drinks are a courtesy that each casino sets its own rules for, and no casino guarantees them.

You must be 21. Nevada law prohibits gambling by anyone under 21, and the drinking age is also 21. Casinos check ID, and underage guests shouldn't play or linger at machines or tables.

How It Works

• It is for people who are playing. Servers circulate around slot banks and table games and take orders from guests who are actively gambling. Watching a friend play usually doesn't count.
• It is at the casino's discretion. How often servers come round, and to whom, is up to each casino. Service varies by resort, by time of day and by how busy the floor is.
• Some casinos track play. Some casinos use your loyalty card or machine play to decide who is served, so an idle seat, or a card that isn't inserted, may not get a visit. Policies differ and change, so don't count on any particular rule.
• It is not free money. The drink costs you nothing, but the gambling that goes with it does. Casino games have a built-in house edge, so over time the house expects to win. Never gamble more than you set out to just to keep the drinks coming.

Why Your Loyalty Card Matters

Every big casino company runs a free loyalty programme: MGM Rewards at MGM resorts, Caesars Rewards at Caesars resorts, and Wynn Rewards at Wynn and Encore, among others. Joining costs nothing; Wynn, for example, lets you sign up at a desk or kiosk on the casino floor, by phone or online.

• Insert the card whenever you play. It records your play, which is how casinos award points and other comps, and at some casinos it also affects drink service.
• Points aren't only for gamblers who bet big. Programmes typically let you redeem points for dining, rooms and more. Check the programme's own terms.
• Pick one company if you visit often. Playing mostly at one group's resorts builds points faster than spreading play around.

None of these is a guarantee. If drinks matter to you, choose a spot where servers clearly pass by, and keep your bets at a level you are comfortable losing.

Tipping Etiquette

Cocktail servers are paid partly in tips, and tipping when your drink arrives is expected even though the drink is comped. Tip in cash or with a chip.

• Standard drink: a dollar or two per drink is the common custom.
• A premium or complicated order, or a round for several people: tip more.
• Tip on the first drink. Servers remember who tipped, and a good tip early tends to mean good service later.
• At the bar: tip the bartender per drink as you would anywhere, even when the drink is comped for play.

What to Order

• Standard choices such as beer, wine, well spirits with a mixer, and simple cocktails are what casino floor service is set up for.
• Premium brands may or may not be available comped; ask the server, and don't be surprised if the answer is no.
• Non-alcoholic drinks: water, soft drinks, juice and coffee are available too, and are the smart choice between cocktails in the dry desert air.
• Keep it simple on a busy floor: an easy order arrives faster.

Drink and Play Responsibly

• Set a gambling budget before you sit down and stop when it is gone. Free drinks are never a reason to keep playing.
• Alternate with water. Heat and alcohol dehydrate you quickly, especially in summer.
• Alcohol affects judgement. It is easy to bet bigger or play longer after a few drinks. Take breaks.
• Servers can refuse service to anyone who appears intoxicated, and casinos can ask you to leave.
• Get home safely. Use rideshare, a taxi or the monorail; never drive after drinking.
