Each record carries your IP address and browser user agent. We use it to understand what our members read and to spot fake or abusive accounts. We keep it for as long as your account exists
• Newsletter consent record: When you ask to subscribe we record the time, the IP address and browser user agent the request came from, the page you signed up on and the wording you agreed to; when you confirm, we record the time, IP address and user agent of that click. This is our proof that you asked for the newsletter. A request that is not confirmed within 7 days is deleted, except for a log entry of the address, time, IP address and user agent, which we keep to recognise bots signing up other people’s addresses. Once you have confirmed, we keep the record (and the date you unsubscribed, if you do) after you unsubscribe, so we can show your consent and make sure we never email you after you opt out. Ask us and we will erase it
• Spam protection: When a contact form, sign-in or sign-in link request is blocked as likely spam or for coming too often, we keep the IP address, user agent and what was submitted, to recognise repeat abuse
