Winter in Las Vegas surprises people who picture it as permanently hot. From November to February the days are usually mild and sunny, the nights are genuinely cold, and the desert parks around the city are at their most comfortable. It is also a season of very uneven prices: quiet midweek stays can be cheap, while race week, rodeo week, New Year's and CES push rates sharply up.
This guide was checked in September 2026. It gives the 2026–27 dates that had been announced by then; anything not yet announced is left for you to check on the event's own site.
Is Winter a Good Time to Visit?
For most visitors, yes, with two caveats.
- Good: comfortable daytime temperatures for walking the Strip and hiking; holiday decorations and shows; outdoor trips to Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire at their best; some of the year's lowest hotel rates on quiet weeks.
- Less good: most resort pools close or cut back; evenings are cold enough for a proper jacket; and a handful of event weeks make hotels expensive and busy.
Winter Weather by Month
Las Vegas winters are dry and bright, with big swings between day and night. Typical conditions (check the National Weather Service forecast for your dates):
| Month | Days | Nights | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | Mild, often in the 60s °F | Cool, 40s | The most comfortable winter month for outdoor plans |
| December | Cool, 50s | Near or just above freezing | Jacket weather after dark |
| January | Cool, 50s | Near or just above freezing | Usually the coldest stretch; rain and wind occasionally |
| February | Warming, high 50s to 60s | Cold, 40s | Spring starts to show by late month |
- Rain is infrequent but winter is the wettest part of the year; a passing storm can bring a grey day.
- Wind can make a mild day feel cold, especially on open walkways and pedestrian bridges.
- Snow in the city is rare. The Spring Mountains to the west, including Mount Charleston, regularly get snow.
- Sun is still strong at midday. Sunscreen and sunglasses are worth packing.
Winter Events to Plan Around
These events fill hotels. Go for them, or avoid their dates if you're hunting a cheap room.
- Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, November 19–21, 2026: the race runs on a street circuit that includes part of the Strip, so expect road closures, restricted pedestrian bridges and very high hotel rates that week.
- Thanksgiving weekend: busy, with holiday buffets and shows.
- National Finals Rodeo: the Wrangler NFR is held at the Thomas & Mack Center in the first half of December, and brings rodeo fans and Western events all over town. Check the NFR's site for 2026 dates and tickets.
- Holiday season: resorts decorate from November. The Bellagio Conservatory's holiday display is a free highlight, and several resorts put up light displays and ice rinks. See our Christmas guide and ice skating guide.
- New Year's Eve: the Strip closes to traffic for a street party and fireworks launched from resort rooftops, and Fremont Street holds a ticketed celebration. Hotel rates peak. See our New Year's Eve guide.
- CES, January 6–9, 2027: the giant tech trade show is for industry attendees, not the public, but it fills hotels across the city and raises rates for the whole week.
- Super Bowl and big fight weekends: sports weekends in late January and February can also lift prices. Check the calendar before booking.

Indoor Attractions
Cold evenings and the occasional wet day are good excuses for the city's indoor sights:
- The Mob Museum (Downtown): the history of organized crime and law enforcement in Las Vegas and beyond; allow a couple of hours.
- The Neon Museum (Downtown): restored casino signs in an outdoor "boneyard." Evening tours are at their best in winter, but wrap up.
- National Atomic Testing Museum: the story of nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site.
- Resident shows: Cirque du Soleil runs four shows in Las Vegas ("O", KÀ, Mystère and Michael Jackson ONE), plus magic, comedy and headliners. See our Cirque guide.
- Shopping: the Forum Shops at Caesars, the Grand Canal Shoppes at the Venetian and Palazzo, and the two Las Vegas Premium Outlets. See our shopping guide.
- The Sphere: the immersive venue next to the Venetian runs films and concerts year-round.

Outdoor Trips at Their Best
Winter is prime season for the desert parks, when summer heat is not a danger. Start early: days are short and parks close at set times.
- Red Rock Canyon (about 30 minutes west): the 13-mile Scenic Drive and trails such as Calico Tanks. A timed entry reservation is required from October 1 to May 31 for entry between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and the drive closes at 5 p.m. from November to February. See our Red Rock Canyon guide.
- Valley of Fire (about an hour northeast): the Fire Wave and White Domes trails, which close from May 15 to September 30, are open all winter. Note that the west entrance is closed Monday to Thursday until the end of 2026. See our Valley of Fire guide.
- Mount Charleston and Lee Canyon (under an hour northwest): snow play, and skiing and snowboarding at Lee Canyon, which describes itself as less than an hour from the Strip. Mountain roads can require chains or four-wheel drive after snow; check conditions before you go.
- Hoover Dam and Lake Mead (about 45 minutes southeast): comfortable weather for walking across the dam and the Lake Mead shoreline. See our Hoover Dam guide.
- The Grand Canyon: the West Rim is a long day trip; the South Rim can see snow and ice in winter. See our Grand Canyon tours guide.
Winter Hotel Prices and Booking
Winter rates swing more with events than with the weather. Rather than trust any average, compare rates for your dates on the hotel's own site and look at the week either side. General patterns:
- Usually cheaper: Sunday to Thursday nights in early December and much of January and February outside event weeks.
- Usually expensive: F1 race week in November, NFR in early December, Christmas to New Year's, CES week in January, and big sports weekends.
- Resort fees still apply in winter. Since May 2025, the FTC's fee rule means the total price shown when booking must include mandatory resort fees, so compare totals.
- Pools: if a heated pool matters, check the resort's pool page for winter hours before booking.
See our hotel booking tips and our complete hotels guide.
What to Pack
- A warm jacket for evenings, plus a lighter layer for the day.
- Sweaters or fleece and long trousers.
- Comfortable closed shoes; hiking shoes if you're heading to the parks.
- Hat, gloves and scarf for night-time outdoor shows, the Neon Museum or New Year's Eve.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a water bottle: the air is dry and the sun still strong.
- Lip balm and moisturizer for the dry desert air.
- Swimwear only if your hotel has a heated pool open in winter.
Dress in layers: casinos and theaters are heated, but walking between resorts after dark is cold.
Money-Saving Tips
- Pick your week around the event calendar, not just the month. A week without a major convention or event can cost a fraction of CES week.
- Stay midweek and check whether shifting one night changes the total.
- Consider Downtown or off-Strip hotels for lower rates and often cheaper parking.
- Use the free sights: the Bellagio Conservatory and fountains, the Fremont Street Experience light canopy, and holiday displays in the resorts.
- Buy a Red Rock Annual Pass ($50) only if you'll visit more than twice; single entry is $20 per car.
- Check parking fees: most big Strip resorts charge for parking.
More in our Vegas budget guide.
Practical Tips: Holidays, Crowds and Closures
- Thanksgiving and Christmas: casinos stay open, but some restaurants and attractions close or shorten hours; Red Rock's Scenic Drive is open only 6 a.m. to noon on both days. Book holiday meals early.
- New Year's Eve: the Strip closes to cars in the evening, rides are scarce and slow, and many venues sell tickets or charge covers. Plan how you'll get back to your hotel.
- Race week: F1 track construction and closures affect traffic in the weeks around the race, not just race weekend.
- Short days: sunset comes early, so start outdoor trips in the morning.
- Mountain roads: check road conditions before driving to Mount Charleston after snow.
The Bottom Line
Winter is one of the most pleasant times to visit Las Vegas if you plan around its busy weeks. November and early December give the most comfortable weather; January and February are cooler and, outside CES and big sports weekends, among the best-value weeks of the year. Pack for cold nights, book the desert parks for the morning, and check the event calendar before you choose your dates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Las Vegas Winter Guide 2026-27: Weather, Events and Hotel Timing (Nov–Feb)
Winter days are usually mild and sunny, with highs mostly in the 50s and 60s °F, while nights are cold, sometimes near freezing in December and January. Rain is infrequent, wind can make it feel colder, and snow in the city is rare, though the nearby Spring Mountains get it regularly. Pack a warm jacket for evenings and check the forecast for your dates.
Yes, for most people. It is comfortable for walking the Strip and ideal for Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire, and quiet midweek stays can be cheap. The trade-offs are cold evenings, reduced pool hours, and a few very busy weeks, including the F1 race in November, the National Finals Rodeo in December, New Year's Eve and CES in January.
Formula 1's 2026 calendar lists the Las Vegas Grand Prix for November 19 to 21, 2026. The street circuit uses part of the Strip, so expect road closures and restricted walkways that week, plus track work in the weeks around it. Hotel rates are among the highest of the year, so avoid race week if you aren't going for the race.
CES 2027 runs January 6 to 9, 2027, according to the show's organizers. It is a trade event for the technology industry rather than the public, but it fills hotels across Las Vegas and pushes rates up for the whole week. If you're visiting in early January for other reasons, compare prices the week before and after.
Yes. Lee Canyon, on Mount Charleston in the Spring Mountains, describes itself as less than an hour from the Strip, with 445 acres of lift-served and hike-to terrain. Opening dates depend on snow and weren't announced for 2026-27 when this guide was checked. Mountain roads can require chains or four-wheel drive after storms.
Some are, but most resorts close pools or cut back hours in the cooler months, and dayclubs usually close for the season. A few resorts keep a heated pool open year-round. If a pool matters to your trip, check the resort's own pool page for winter hours before booking rather than assuming.
Bring layers: a warm jacket for evenings, sweaters or fleece, long trousers and comfortable closed shoes. Add a hat and gloves if you'll be outside at night, for example on New Year's Eve or at the Neon Museum. The sun is still strong and the air dry, so pack sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm and a water bottle.
Yes, and winter is one of the best times to go. The Fire Wave and White Domes trails, which Nevada State Parks closes from May 15 to September 30, are open. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Until the end of 2026 the west entrance is closed Monday to Thursday for construction, so use the east entrance on those days.
