About
Wayne Newton's Las Vegas career began on May 16, 1959, when he and his brother Jerry debuted as the Newton Brothers in the Carnival Room at the Fremont Hotel downtown. According to his official biography, cited by the Review-Journal, he was 15 when he started performing in Las Vegas. He moved to the city that year and has been part of it ever since.
Over the following decades he played many of the Strip's best-known showrooms, including the Sands, the Frontier, the Flamingo, Caesars Palace, the Stardust, the Las Vegas Hilton and the Desert Inn. His relentless schedule earned him the title "Mr. Las Vegas." "When people started calling me that, I thought it was because I just wouldn't leave," he said in 2019. "But it is the greatest compliment one can be paid." He is reported to have performed more than 30,000 solo shows in Las Vegas.
His home was as famous as his act. Newton bought the first five acres of what became Casa de Shenandoah in 1966 and expanded it to about 39 acres near what is now Harry Reid International Airport, with Arabian horses, a private jet and a mansion full of memorabilia. He sold the property in 2010 and moved out in 2013. Investors ran it as a museum, Wayne Newton's Casa de Shenandoah, from September 2015 until July 2018.
Newton marked his 60th anniversary in Las Vegas with a show at Caesars Palace in May 2019 and passed his 65th in May 2024. In September 2026 the Review-Journal reported that, at 84, he was still performing at the Flamingo.
