About

The South Rim is the main developed side of Grand Canyon National Park. The National Park Service says about 90 percent of park visitors go there, and that it is open 24 hours a day, all year. The rim averages about 7,000 feet above sea level, and NPS warns that walking at that height can be strenuous, especially for people with heart or breathing problems.

From Las Vegas, coach tours cross the Colorado River on the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge beside Hoover Dam, then run east through the Mojave Desert along the Route 66 corridor. Most of the day is on the bus. The operators listed here give about three hours inside the park.

Since January 1, 2026, non-US residents aged 16 and over pay a $100 per-person fee on top of standard entry, unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass. The park takes cards only.

What to expect

Expect a very early start. Canyon Tours lists a 5:30 a.m. tour time with hotel pickup about an hour before. Coaches have reclining seats, restrooms and large windows, and guides narrate on the way. There are rest stops, and the bus crosses the Hoover Dam bypass bridge rather than stopping at the dam.

At the park, the visit centers on Mather Point and the Grand Canyon Village area. Gray Line's version includes a guided walk along the paved Rim Trail from Mather Point to the Bright Angel Trailhead, then free time around Bright Angel Lodge. Canyon Tours visits two viewpoints and park shops. After about three hours the coach heads back, arriving late in the evening.

Questions about Grand Canyon South Rim Day Trip by Motor Coach from Las Vegas

How much time do you actually get at the Grand Canyon?

About three hours. Gray Line says its tour spends three hours inside Grand Canyon National Park, and Canyon Tours lists about three hours on the rim. The rest of a 13 to 14 hour day is the drive from Las Vegas and back, with rest stops along the way.

Is park entry included?

Gray Line lists park admission as included. Canyon Tours' page focuses on the separate fee for international guests. Non-US residents aged 16 and over must pay an extra $100 per person to NPS, unless they have an annual or America the Beautiful pass. Ask your operator before booking how this fee is handled on the day.

Why is the South Rim trip so long?

Because of the distance. The South Rim is much farther from Las Vegas than Grand Canyon West, so most of the day is spent on the coach. Canyon Tours lists about 14 hours hotel to hotel and Gray Line about 13 hours, both with roughly three hours in the park.

Is the South Rim the same as Grand Canyon West?

No. The South Rim is in Grand Canyon National Park, run by the National Park Service. Grand Canyon West, home of the Skywalk, is on the Hualapai Reservation and is run by the Hualapai Tribe. They are different places with different fees, and national park passes are not valid at Grand Canyon West.

Can I bring a bag on the bus?

A small one. Gray Line and Canyon Tours both prohibit luggage, large backpacks, suitcases, briefcases, coolers and alcohol on the coach, citing security rules at Hoover Dam. If you are checking out of your hotel that day, arrange luggage storage before you leave and ask the operator about anything not on its list.
