About
Hoover Dam sits in Black Canyon on the Colorado River, on the Nevada-Arizona line, about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. The Bureau of Reclamation lists it at 726.4 feet from foundation rock to the roadway on the crest. Concrete placement ran from June 1933 to May 1935, and all features were done by March 1936.
A half-day tour handles the driving, the security checkpoint and the $10 garage fee. What you see at the dam differs by operator. Some tickets include the Reclamation-run Power Plant Tour. Others stay outside and add stops such as the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge walkway and Boulder City.
Reclamation's longer Guided Dam Tour is sold only on site. Since August 19, 2026 it has been unavailable until further notice because of elevator repairs. The Power Plant and self-guided Visitor Center tours are running on their normal schedule.
What to expect
Pickup is at your hotel. The drive passes through Boulder City, the town built in the 1930s to house dam workers. At the dam, every vehicle goes through the Nevada security checkpoint. You then pass through a second screening at the Visitor Center, where metal items are wanded and bags are inspected.
Gray Line lists about two hours at the dam, with a Power Plant Tour, the Visitor Center and lookouts on both the Nevada and Arizona sides. Pink Adventure Tours adds a walk on top of the dam, the spillways and the Winged Figures of the Republic. Adventure Photo Tours stays outside. It walks the crest into Arizona, then the bridge walkway about 900 feet above the river, then Boulder City's old main street.

Questions about Hoover Dam Half-Day Tour from Las Vegas
Do half-day Hoover Dam tours go inside the dam?
Some do. Gray Line's Hoover Dam Express and Pink Adventure Tours' Hoover Dam Tour both list the Bureau of Reclamation's Power Plant Tour, which goes through original construction tunnels to a penstock viewing platform and the Nevada Powerhouse generators. Adventure Photo Tours' VIP tour is exterior only. If the interior is closed, Gray Line says it adds other stops and Pink substitutes the bridge and the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum.
Is the Hoover Dam Tour itself running right now?
Not as of this check. A Bureau of Reclamation notice dated August 19, 2026 says the Guided Dam Tour is unavailable until further notice because of unplanned elevator repairs. The Power Plant Tour and the self-guided Visitor Center tour are running on their normal schedule. The Dam Tour is sold only in person at the dam when it runs, so bus tours do not usually include it.
How far is Hoover Dam from Las Vegas?
The Bureau of Reclamation puts the dam about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, in Black Canyon on the Nevada-Arizona border. The dam has no street address. Operators quote roughly four to six hours for the whole round trip, including hotel pickup, time at the dam and any Boulder City or bridge stops.
What should I leave at the hotel?
Leave pocketknives and any other blades behind, since no knife of any size is allowed in a dam building. Firearms, fireworks, drones and marijuana are banned on the property. Gray Line also bars luggage, large backpacks, drugs and alcohol on its coaches. Sealed water and snacks are fine to bring, but you cannot eat or drink inside the buildings.
Are these tours suitable for young children or wheelchair users?
Pink Adventure Tours does not accept children under 3 and takes collapsible manual wheelchairs if another adult comes along. Gray Line lets children under 2 ride free and needs 72 hours' notice for a lift-equipped coach. Reclamation says the Power Plant Tour takes wheelchairs, scooters and strollers. The Dam Tour does not allow strollers or motorized wheelchairs.
