About
July is the hottest month in Las Vegas. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Harry Reid International Airport give an average high of 104.5°F and an average low of 82.0°F. A normal July has 25.8 days of 100°F or more and 5.3 days of 110°F or more. The city's all-time record, 120°F, was set on July 7, 2024; the Southern Nevada Health District notes it was tied the following day.
The nights are hot too. A normal July has 19.4 nights that stay at or above 80°F, and in 2023 the airport recorded eight nights that never dropped below 90°F, according to the National Weather Service. SNHD warns that high overnight temperatures during heat waves limit the body's ability to recover.
July is also when the North American monsoon usually arrives. The NWS says a push of moisture typically moves into the Mojave Desert in July and August, raising humidity and triggering scattered thunderstorms that build over the surrounding mountains and move into the valley. Gusty winds can cause damage, but the main hazard is heavy rain that sends flash floods down normally dry washes and into low-lying areas. Normal July precipitation is 0.38 inches, almost all of it from these storms.

Good to know
- Treat the heat as a hazard. SNHD advises staying hydrated before you feel thirsty, avoiding direct sun, limiting alcohol, and keeping outdoor activity to early morning or evening.
- Know heat stroke. The NWS lists a body temperature above 103°F, confusion, slurred speech and hot, red skin; call 911, move the person somewhere cooler and do not give fluids.
- Watch for monsoon storms. Never drive or walk into flood water: the NWS says 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult and 12 inches can carry away most cars.
- Never leave children or pets in a parked car, SNHD warns, even with windows open.
- Pack lightweight, light-coloured, loose clothing, a hat and high-SPF sunscreen, as SNHD recommends.
