Bookstores in Las Vegas 2026: Independent, Comics and Barnes & Noble

There are no bookstores inside the big Strip resorts, but Las Vegas does have places to browse: a well-loved independent bookstore downtown, a comic shop that has been open since 1995, four Barnes & Noble stores and a 25-branch public library.

Bookshops close quietly, and several stores older guides still recommend are gone or could not be confirmed. We checked each store below against its own website in September 2026. Hours change, so check before you make the trip.

Independent Bookstore: The Writer's Block

The Writer's Block is downtown Las Vegas's independent bookstore, a short walk from Fremont East and the Arts District. It is known for a hand-picked selection of books and for its events. Its website did not show an address or hours when we checked in September 2026, so look them up before you go; the store's events (readings and signings) are the best reason to time a visit.

Comic Book Store: Alternate Reality Comics

Alternate Reality Comics, established in 1995, is at 5300 S Eastern Avenue, Suite 130, south-east of the Strip near Harry Reid International Airport. Look for its mascots, Kotter and Maude, above the entrance. It stocks new comics and graphic novels, supplies from boxes to sleeves, and a large back-issue selection including Silver Age comics, and it buys vintage collections from the 1980s and earlier. It shares the block with a toy shop and a trading-card store, so collectors can make an afternoon of it. Phone (702) 736-3673 to check hours.

Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble's store locator lists four stores in the Las Vegas area. All stock toys and games; three have a café, and three sell vinyl records.

Town Square, an open-air shopping centre at the south end of the Strip, is the easiest for visitors: a short rideshare from Mandalay Bay or the airport. Author signings and readings are listed on each store's events page. For more shopping, see our shopping guide.

Used and Cheap Books

Las Vegas has lost several of its long-running used bookstores; websites for some of the best-known ones now redirect elsewhere or no longer resolve. For cheap books today:

• Thrift stores across the valley have book shelves; stock turns over constantly.
• Alternate Reality Comics for back-issue comics.
• Library sales: ask at your local branch about book sales run by its supporters.

The Public Library

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District runs 25 locations across the valley, with free library cards, book and film clubs and events. The district's main number is (702) 734-READ (7323). Anyone can visit a branch to read or to join an event. Check the district's site for branch hours and the book club calendar.

Tips for Book Lovers

• Plan for a car or rideshare. None of these stores is on the Strip, and they are spread across the valley.
• Call ahead for specific books. Independent and comic shops will often hold or order a title for you.
• Time your visit to an event. Readings and signings at The Writer's Block and Barnes & Noble are listed on their websites.
