About
Summerlin sits on land Howard Hughes bought along the western rim of the valley. The developer says he acquired about 30,000 acres there. Plans were announced in 1988, and the name honors his paternal grandmother, Jean Amelia Summerlin. Building began in 1990, and the first family moved in during March 1991.
The community now covers nearly 36 square miles and is organized into villages, each with its own parks and schools. The developer counts more than 120,000 residents, more than 300 parks and over 200 miles of trails. Its western side borders Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
Downtown Summerlin opened on October 9, 2014. It began as a 106-acre shopping, dining and entertainment district inside a planned 400-acre urban core. It now also holds offices, apartments and Las Vegas Ballpark.
What to expect
Most visitors come to Summerlin for Downtown Summerlin or on the way to Red Rock Canyon. Downtown Summerlin is an outdoor, walkable district of shops, restaurants and offices, with apartments built around it. It also hosts events such as weekly Fitness on The Lawn. Las Vegas Ballpark, home of the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators, is part of the same district.
Away from the downtown core, Summerlin is mostly homes, parks and schools, linked by trails. Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa on West Charleston Boulevard has a casino, spa, bowling and a movie theater. West of the community, Red Rock Canyon's 13-mile Scenic Drive and its trailheads sit just beyond the last neighborhoods.
