About
Michael Jackson ONE is Cirque du Soleil's tribute to Michael Jackson at Mandalay Bay. It premiered in June 2013. Jamie King wrote and directed it, with Welby Altidor as director of creation and Kevin Antunes as musical director.
The show sets reworked versions of Jackson's songs against acrobatics, urban dance and projected visuals. Cirque says a cast of 63 performers carries it. The choreography team includes Travis Payne, Rich and Tone Talauega, and Parris Goebel. The "Man in the Mirror" scene was created by Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon.
Cirque describes the show's message as "we are all connected." The producers say it was the first indoor show in North America to fly drones over the audience. They also say nine new LED panels now run through the whole theater.
What to expect
This is a music-driven show rather than a story show. Each scene is built around a Jackson track played through a surround-sound system, so the music comes from all sides of the room. Cirque highlights a Beat It number with dancers on rotating bungees and a high-energy Smooth Criminal act. A newer diabolo routine is set to Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'. Expect aerial stunts, LED screens and projections throughout the 90 minutes, with no intermission.
Cirque does not publish a dress code, so dress up or wear whatever is comfortable. Phones and small pocket cameras are allowed, and the show invites guests to share photos. Flash photography and filming of any kind are strictly prohibited. Children under 5 are not admitted.
