About

The STRAT Hotel, Casino & Tower sits at the north end of the Strip. Its tower stands 1,149 feet tall, and the resort calls it the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States. The thrill rides are on levels 112 and 109, between 800 and 1,000 feet above the ground.

Big Shot is the ride that is currently running. It launches 16 riders from a platform 921 feet up, along the tower's mast to 1,081 feet, a climb of 160 feet at 45 mph, and then drops them and launches them again.

X-Scream is listed by The STRAT as currently closed. When it runs, it tips riders headfirst 27 feet over the edge of the tower from 866 feet up, holds them there, then pulls them back and repeats. The separate SkyJump attraction also leaves from the tower.

What to expect

Ride tickets include tower admission. You take the elevator to the observation decks, which have indoor and outdoor levels, then go out to the rides. On Big Shot you sit with your legs dangling, are pushed up the mast in seconds, and feel what the resort describes as four Gs on the way up and negative Gs on the way down.

The rides run in the afternoon and evening and only when weather allows. Expect a metal-detector screening and a bag search before you go up the tower. The observation deck also has 108 Eats for sandwiches and ice cream, and 108 Drinks for cocktails, both requiring tower admission.
