Downtown Las Vegas is the city's urban core, run by the City of Las Vegas. Its center is the Fremont Street Experience, which describes itself as a five-block entertainment district under The Canopy, a lit overhead display. Hotel-casinos on the mall include Binion's, the California, Circa, The D, Fremont, Four Queens, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget and Main Street Station.

East of the mall, the city describes the Fremont East Entertainment District as a multi-block area of retro neon signs, bars, restaurants and shops, including the El Cortez hotel-casino. Symphony Park, to the west, is the city's cultural hub and home to The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

Museums sit within a short ride. The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, is on Stewart Avenue. The Neon Museum is on Las Vegas Boulevard North.

What to expect

The Fremont Street Experience is open 24 hours and puts on free concerts and performances across three stages every night. The SlotZilla zipline runs above the mall. Downtown Container Park, at 707 Fremont St., is an open-air center with shops, restaurants, a children's play area called The Treehouse, and free events on its main stage.

The Mob Museum is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. The Underground, a separate venue at the museum, opens 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. The Neon Museum is open 3 to 11 p.m. from September through May, with last entry at 10 p.m. Summer hours are 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is sold online.

The city's Downtown Loop is a free shuttle. It stops at the Bonneville Transit Center, the Arts District, Fremont East, The Mob Museum, the Fremont Street Experience, Symphony Park, The STRAT, Circa and the Las Vegas North Premium Outlets, among others.
Downtown Loop hours are Sunday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 3 to 10 p.m. The Fremont Street Experience stop is temporarily on Main Street just north of Ogden Avenue because of construction.
From the Strip, take the Deuce. It stops on Las Vegas Boulevard, Carson Street and 4th Street for the Fremont Street Experience, at Stewart and 4th for The Mob Museum, and at the Bonneville Transit Center.
The Fremont Street parking garage entrance is at 4th and Carson streets. Clearance is 7 feet, and drivers get a 15-minute grace period to exit before fees apply.
